Israel is God's first wife, but she was unfaithful (the only reason for divorce permitted, Matthew 19:9) and He divorced her. Still He pursued her to redeem her and the Church became God's second wife. Israel was His earthly wife, the Church (which includes Israel by individuals) is His heavenly wife (Revelation 19:7, 21:9).
