Chapter 110.3

Empty men (Judges 11:3)
- 3 Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain men to Jephthah, and went out with him.
- 3 So Christ made haste before his kindred, and tarried in a "Good land" where he gleaned empty men and departed.
The story of Jacob parallels this:
He went to a good land where he prospered, then the people he brought with him were empty because they were gathered before his death experience.
His death experience was when he wrestled in the ravine. He came out limping, reminiscent of Jesus' bruised heel. And he had a new name.
Israel also prospered in the 'good land' of the promised land but it was vain because they also were just earthly people.
How did Jesus harvest empty men?
During his earthly ministry he gathered thousands to himself, but they were empty and abandoned him prior to the cross. The fleshly ministry of Jesus produced no increase. His death was still required for there to be living heirs to Adam.
Can you think of a better term for men who are separated from God by sin? The word also means 'vain'. Solomon tells us that all earthly pursuits are vain. The world is full of empty men living in vain.
